Cullen Communications joins global B Corp community

Cullen Communications, the Dublin-based PR and communications agency, is now a certified B Corp business. The agency joins a global network of more than 7,400 ‘B Corporations’ worldwide, including just 25 Irish companies, that try to use business as a force for good.

B Corp certification was developed as a way of transforming the global economy to benefit people, communities, and the planet. The ‘B’ in B Corp stands for ‘Benefit for all’. In order to achieve B Corp certification, companies must therefore meet the highest standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency.

Cullen Communications was awarded B Corp status after a rigorous assessment across five key areas of the business: Workers; Environment; Governance; Customers; and Community. The agency achieved an overall ‘B Impact’ score of 93.2, with companies needing a minimum score of 80 on the assessment to qualify.

Based in Ballsbridge, Dublin 4, Cullen Communications is a second-generation family business. The company was founded in 1985 by Frank Cullen, whose son Owen took over the running of the PR and communications agency in 2013.

“Achieving B Corp status is a huge moment for us,” said Owen Cullen, Managing Director of Cullen Communications. “We are extremely proud to have joined the B Corp community and we’re committed to becoming an even more responsible organisation.

“Benefits of being a purpose-led business”

“We also see ourselves as B Corp ambassadors and we look forward to demonstrating the benefits of being a purpose-led business to our stakeholders,” Mr Cullen said. “We are also in a unique position to advise and accompany our clients and other brands on their own sustainability journeys.”

As part of its B Corp certification, Cullen Communications has:

  • Shown exceptional social and environmental performance by achieving a ‘B Impact Assessment’ score of 93.2
  • Made a legal commitment to B Corp by permanently changing the company’s governance structure to ensure greater accountability to all stakeholders (not just shareholders)
  • Allowed Cullen Communications’ ESG performance to be publicly available on the B Lab website

James McManus, Director of B Lab Ireland, said: “Congratulations to Cullen Communications on achieving B Corp certification. The agency has clearly demonstrated a strong commitment to people and planet, not only in the way it does business but through the brands and partners the company chooses to work with. We are excited to welcome Cullen Communications and we look forward to seeing the agency grow, lead and contribute to the global B Corp community.”

“We have worked really hard for our B Corp status but this is the beginning of the journey, not the end,” said Owen Cullen. “As a communications agency, we want to inspire others through our words and actions, and show how operating responsibly is good for people and planet.”

Other Irish B Corps include Danone, Baileys, Strong Roots and Thinkhouse, while international brands that are part of the B Corp movement include Ben & Jerry’s, Innocent Drinks, Patagonia, the Body Shop and WeTransfer.
