Derek Moran, the former Secretary General of the Department of Finance, has joined public relations company MKC Communications as a consultant in the company’s public affairs practice. Mr. Moran was Secretary General of the Department of Finance from 2014 – 2021, serving under Ministers Paschal Donohoe and his predecessor Michael Noonan, overseeing economic, budgetary, taxation, banking and financial service policy matters.

MKC specialises in reputation management, media relations, crisis management and public affairs for global multinational and Irish companies, public sector agencies and not for profit organisations. The company’s clients are across the corporate, healthcare, energy, transport, technology, professional services, education and agrifood sectors.

Mr. Moran served as Secretary General of the Department of Finance as the economy returned to growth after the financial crisis. Most recently he was centrally involved in planning the economic and budgetary response to the Covid-19 pandemic. Prior to this, he held positions as Assistant Secretary General from 2003 – 2014 with responsibilities including economic policy, taxation and preparation of the budget. In a career spanning nearly four decades, he held other senior roles in the Departments of Finance and Health respectively, having first started work with the Department of the Environment in 1986.

He has also served as a board member of the Central Bank Commission, National Treasury Management Agency, Civil Service Management Board and as Chairman of the Financial Stability Group. He currently serves on a number of bodies including the National Paediatric Hospital Development Board, Professional Standards Board of Chartered Accountants Ireland, Audit Committee of the Department of Foreign Affairs, the Council of the Foundation of Fiscal Studies and the Scottish Government’s Exchequer Board.

Derek is a native of Dublin and graduate of University College Dublin, holding a Degree in Economics and Politics and a Master’s Degree in Politics.
